AXES DE RÉSONNANCE ET GÉOGRAPHIES RELATIONELLES
Goethe Institut Rabat, Morocco
2022
The performance AXES DE RÉSONNANCE ET GÉOGRAPHIES RELATIONELLES (engl. resonance axes and relational geographies) constitutes a direct relationship between ritual, movement, and space. The focus of the performance is the act of sweeping. The sweepers, who are twins, attempt to resonate physically and acoustically within a limited field. The carpet of sound is created by sweeping and overlong broomsticks touching the ceiling surface. The axes formed by the broomsticks and the ceiling are at an angle to the earth’s axis. There are also pieces of coal at the broomsticks` ends, so the pushing, stroking, and pulling movements when sweeping leave traces of coal on the ceiling. While the twins clean the floor, they “dirty” the ceiling simultaneously. As they listen together and hold each other inside, the pair slowly draw circles that could be seen as the cartography of a world map. This scenario is altered by the appearance of a third actor wearing a mirror mask. With their eyes covered, the person looks at a map showing areas of high and low pressure on the earth and tries to trace the wind currents with their hand on the ground. These lines are picked up by the sweeping actors with the broom and transferred to the ceiling again. The map of wind currents thus appears, translated several times as a chaotic earth wind system on the ceiling and floor space. In the work, the space reveals its liveliness by becoming an equal actor within an action dominated by humans.
